Brighton beach #2

Brighton Beach #2. A bright winter afternoon looking towards Brighton marina from the pier. Acrylics on paper – 51 x 40.5 cm © Martin Southwood

Here is the follow-up to my previous painting of Brighton Beach, but looking from the other side of Brighton Palace Pier.

Brighton beach and its contrasts

The smaller painting has a post-apocalyptic air, which is echoed here. But the contrast, if anything, is more apparent.

Firstly, the contrast between the distinct shapes of sea and gravel. Secondly, between the distant marina and the winter-clad walkers. Thirdly, between light and shade.

Brighton and the artist’s eye

The curious atmosphere of dystopian collapse is further explored: walkers like automata or zombies, the chemical blues of sea and sky, the endless beach, and the distant white buildings.

The dark inky shadow of the pier hints at observers. The walkers gaze absently at the sea, the gravel, themselves – their long winter shadows like tombs that follow them.

If you’re looking for a painting with lots of blues, you might like this broom flowering against a blue sky – or maybe this view of Langstone Harbour. If swimming is your thing, try The Bather.
