A nocturne is technically a painting of the night, but I wanted the romantic association.
‘Nocturne – sunset in the woods’ owes its origin to a video sent to me by a friend. I was instantly drawn to the scene. Even though the view is looking out from a front door to a small front garden with bins and a privet hedge, the trees behind seemed wet and wild.
I wanted to picture the contrast between the remaining brightness of the setting sun and the darkness of the trees. I also liked the contrast between the straight lines of the gate and the hedge, and the waving, twisting, slightly crazy, movement of the trees.
Additionally, I found in the arrangement of branches a sort of ‘wild gate’, and I liked the juxtaposition of the wild gate with the garden gate.
