The park in winter is Manor Park in Aldershot, which I previously painted here (a view through the wilded area). The trees that are the subject of the painting are the same slightly surreal hornbeams that I have painted before.

Winter Park – a cliché?

This was supposed to be a ‘side painting’ – something to offer a diversion from working on a larger, more detailed piece – but it took quite a long time to paint. I suppose trees reflected in a puddle are one of the worst cliches in painting and photography, but that doesn’t make them any less interesting.

Winter park hornbeams

The hornbeams usually drop their leaves slowly, and yellow flurries gust about the park, but they stay green for a long time. This winter brought icy temperatures, and the first day below freezing brought all the remaining leaves down at once.

I liked the bright green and white of the frozen grass. the dark wet leaves, and the bright pool of twigs and branches. A worse cliche of the park in winter would have been branches and snow!
